The Club is saddened to hear of the death at the age of 88 of Michael Jayston who was a regular player for the Club in the 1970s. More widely known for his TV, stage and screen roles, his typically eccentric legbreak bowling earned him 168 wickets at an average of 18.03 in his 122 appearances for the Club. Although his batting was less prolific his man-of-the-match performance against Devas Old Boys in 1974 saw him hit 52n.o. as Byfleet recovered from 44 for 7 to pass Devas’ total of 110 for the loss of no further wickets. The modest first innings total was largely down to Mike’s 6 for 35 including 3 wickets in 4 balls. Michael spent recent years living in Hove and he was a regular spectator at Sussex’s home matches. He was also a staunch supporter and member at Rottingdean C.C. where he served as President for many years up until his death.
Mike is pictured in the 1974 team photo, back row, second from right.
