We regret to announce the recent death of one of the Club’s Vice Presidents, John Cottrell. Longer standing members will recognise John’s contribution to the club in the 1960s, 70s and 80s, during which time he made over 300 appearances on the field.
For many seasons he captained the Second Eleven and was always a steadying influence in the batting line up, also making a significant contribution with the ball. Although records are not entirely complete we can say for sure that he scored over 4000 runs and took around 200 wickets, and won the second eleven batting trophy in 1975. One annual report commented: “Pride of place amongst individuals must go to John Cottrell, whose batting was a model of disciplined consistency, his only apparent fault being his proneness to hole out to the worst ball of the day“.
He leaves his wife, Mary, who has also been a staunch supporter of the club, and sons Melvin, Colin and Robin, of whom the former two were also regular playing members through the 70s and 80s.
The funeral is to be held at Woking crematorium on Tuesday 14th June at 3.30pm.
